The History In One Act

1947 - enterDevizes Amateur Dramatic Society - forerunner of the Wharf Theatre. Playing at various venues in Devizes.
1970 - Scene IIThe Company moved to a room at the Elm Tree Hotel for a period of two years.
1973 - Scene IIIWork started on conversion of an old building in Couch Lane leased from Devizes Borough Council for use as a theatre. Opened for members only in October of that year as the Wharf Theatre.
1974 - Scene IV Theatre license granted, opened to the general public.
1979 - Scene VClosure of Couch Lane theatre due to redevelopment of the Wharf area.
1980 - Scene VIWharf Theatre opened its new building, a former canal warehouse
1989 - Scene VIIExtension of Wharf Theatre to provide enlarged foyer, workshop, dressing room and costume storage space.
2001 - Scene VIII Gala celebrations for 21 years at the Wharf.
2007 - Scene IXThe WYT, Wharf Youth Theatre, is established.
Epilogue - The Wharf Theatre offers seating for 96 theatre-goers and stages a wide range of productions ranging from panto to opera and comedy to classics. It features significantly in the cultural life of Devizes and is determined to provide a high standard of theatre for many years to come. 2007 saw the highly successful launch of the WYT, thus opening up the world of theatre to younger people. The Wharf Theatre is very aware of, and grateful for, the support it receives from Devizes and the surrounding area and is extremely keen to welcome new members both acting and social.
