The Wharf Theatre traditionally selects an end of season adult production that is a more avant-garde and edgy that the rest of the season, and this production is no exception.  It has adult themes and includes strong language.

'The Pillowman' by Martin McDonagh, writer of the hit film 'In Bruges', is the darkly humourous story of a fiction writer in a totalitarian state.  He is interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a number of child-murders that are happening in his town.  The play is about storytelling and the thrilling narrative potential of theatre itself.  It celebrates thew raw human instinct to invent fantasies, to lie for the sport of it, to play to an audience real or imagined.

'The Pillowman' was first performed at the National Theatre in 2003.  It won the 2004 Olivier Award for Best New Play and the 2004-05 New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best New Foreign Play.

Warning: a viciously funny, seriously disturbing tale which contains scenes and language that may offend.  Not suitable for children.

"Comedies don't come any blacker than 'The Pillowman', this spellbinding stunner of a play" New York Times
