Against the measured, idyllic background of the Dorset landscape, Hardy's most popular story unwinds with the inevitability of a Greek tragedy. Tess has all the most enviable qualities of a woman - intelligence, sensitivity, independence of mind, integrity, compassion - but against a rigid class system and a choking moralistic society which places respectibility higher than morality and goodness, these qualities are to little avail.
Tickets £10, booking from 16th March.
