2011: October: The Deep Blue Sea

Friday 28th October to Saturday 5th November at 7.30 pm

by Terence Rattigan, directed by Deanna Capper

2011 marks the centenary of the birth of Terence Rattigan, one of Britain's most talented playwrights.  To celebrate this, many of his plays are being staged around the country so it seemed appropriate for the Wharf Theatre to pay its own tribute by adding "The Deep Blue Sea" to its programme.

Hester Collyer's husband is a rich, talented lawyer.  Her lover Freddie is neither Hester's moral nor her intellectual equal, but Hester loves him with an intensity that few, and especially not Freddie, are capable of imagining.  They are death to each other.  Hester is driven to suicide, caught between the Devil and the deep blue sea.  She is saved by Dr. Miller, a disbarred doctor, and through him learns to transcend both hope and despair.
