Devizes Film Club – American Fiction

Monk (Jeffrey Wright) is a struggling African-American novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from entertainment that relies on tired and offensive Black stereotypes. So he cynically uses a pen name to dash off an outlandish book that panders to the white appetite for Black trauma. His cliché-ridden potboiler becomes a sensational hit and propels him to the heart of the hypocrisy and madness he claims to disdain.

With a note-perfect cast, American Fiction is an entertaining and incisive satire, brimming with witty banter, from debut director Cord Jefferson. Winner of the Toronto International Film Festival 2023 People’s Choice Award for Best Film.
