In Helsinki, Ansa (Alma Pöysti) works at a supermarket. The job is so badly paid she takes home expired sandwiches for dinner. Holappa (Jussi Vatanen) is a metalworker. His job is so hazardous he’s sure it will kill him. He drinks through the day, and then again at night. They meet by chance in a karaoke bar, their path to happiness beset by obstacles. Master filmmaker Kaurismäki’s latest deadpan gem finds humour and optimism in unlikely circumstances. Against a backdrop of economic disparity and war in Ukraine, Fallen Leaves is an ode to romance and companionship. Winner of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival Jury Prize.
