Donya (Anaita Wali Zada) is a young Afghan refugee living in Fremont, California. Previously a translator for the American army, she now spends her days working at a fortune cookie factory. Lonely in her new environment, she has trouble sleeping. She’s trying to rebuild her life but is tormented by survivor’s guilt for leaving her family and friends behind in Kabul. One day, in an attempt to connect with the wider world, she sends a personal message through a fortune cookie. Tinged with wry, deadpan humour, Fremont is a delightful and visually captivating film. Winner of 7 international film awards.
