Synopsis: Based on John Godber’s Yorkshire grandparents, and other members of his family, Happy Jack is a memory play, which uses reverse chronology to examine the relationship of Jack and Liz. It is a funny, touching, political play capturing the ups and downs of ordinary working class family life – at the coal face, in the pit village and by the fireside. The audience are addressed and then the cast slip into the characters enacting small, detailed extracts from their courtship through to retirement. When we first meet them they are in their 70s.
A cast of 2 – 1 female & 1 male. As the play jumps around in time the age of the characters just need to work together as a couple.
Characters:
Jack: a strong, silent miner who is what he is because of the job that he does. Yorkshire accent.
Liz: his effusive wife, she worries about Jack because of the job that he does. Yorkshire accent.
Meet & Greet: End of August/early September. However, there is an expectation that cast will get their scripts, on acceptance of the part, and start to learn lines.
