The Railway Children

By E.Nesbit, adapted by Mike Kenny

Directed by Freddie Underwood

Performance dates : Monday 8th – Saturday 13th May 2023

Auditions : Sunday 8 January 2023 in the Wharf foyer at 2pm

The Railway Children is a much-loved children’s classic, famously brought to life in the 1970 film starring Jenny Agutter as Bobbie and since then, a 2022 film has been released – The Railway Children Return. This 2008 stage adaptation featured real steam trains at the National Railway Museum in York and Waterloo Station in London. Now this glorious production comes to the Wharf next year. Devizes is going to love it.

This story of a prosperous Edwardian family – mother and three children – forced into near-penury in the rural north of England, captures the anxieties and exhilarations of childhood with great tenderness and insight. Audiences will no doubt smile and cry in equal measure.

The play is told through the eyes of the three children – offering three prized roles for young performers.

Director, Freddie Underwood brought Lovesong (2021), and Things I Know To Be True (2019) to the Wharf stage as well as In the manner of Marilyn and Peter Pan to name a few productions. She is looking forward to working with an enthusiastic and committed cast and as is her style; movement and music will partner with the work of the text to bring the production to life.
