La Traviata (meaning The Fallen Woman) is a tragic opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi. It tells the story of Violetta, a Parisian courtesan who falls in love with a nobleman named Alfredo. However, Violetta sacrifices their idyllic life together after being pressured by Alfredo’s father to leave for the sake of his family’s reputation; she reluctantly writes Alfredo a farewell letter and sets off for Paris. Amid all the tension and heartbreak, there are some rousing party scenes, but ultimately Violetta, having finally been reunited with Alfredo, tragically dies in his arms of tuberculosis – Sung in English.
